With two big dogs and two active cats, keeping our home clean during the winter months can be a huge chore. Here are some of my how-tos to help you get the most from your pets, and your home, this winter season:
Bathing/grooming more often -- One thing for certain, I've become good friends with my groomer!! Bathing Saint Bernards is not easy with my back issues, so my groomer helps me keep them clean between their full meal deal visits. Brushing is a daily event, but it helps on the dander and vacuuming!!
House Trained/ Scratching Posts -- Make sure your pets are thoroughly house trained and have plenty of scratching posts for the cats. This will not only save your home, but will save you time in cleaning and frustration :) Avoid ammonia based cleaners, and always use cleaners specifically designed for pets. Look for enzymes that break down bacteria and eliminate odors. Nature's Pet carries Nature's Miracle, Bissel and Unique brands of enzyme cleaners. Cleaning -- Make sure pet accidents are cleaned up immediately and thoroughly. Letting them sit will not only cause damage, but the lingering smell will draw for repeat offenses. Vacuuming and mopping are also important to do as frequently as you can tolerate :) Daily if you can. Brooms are not very effective with pet hair, vac is much better. I found a GREAT vacuum that is relatively inexpensive (Yay, Walmart!) and WOW the pet attachment does an amazing job on my furniture!!!
Clean Paws -- With the wet weather, a large floor mat at each of the outside doors is a great help. Training your dog to immediately sit on the mat when he comes in is a great way to get him wiped down. Also, keeping a towel set aside for the easy wipe downs is a must. For the feet, There are dog paw cleaning gloves you can buy, or for a fun gift idea, you can make your own!
Aroma Combattants -- Yep, a pet home can smell like a pet home. But here are some great make-it-yourself ideas
Cinnamon and Cloves Air Freshener: In a cheescloth, combine three cinnamon sticks and five whole cloves. Tie at top with Dental floss. Immerse in a small pan of water (or small potpouri pot). Boil these spices for a fragrant aroma!! During the Holidays, seeping cider or teas on the stove is always a good odor eliminator.
Potpourri: Buy or make your own potpourri from your favorite herbs and spices. Place the potpourri in a small basket or jar or in small sachet bags.
Essential oils are ideal for creating effective, all-natural fresheners for the entire house. Simply place one ounce of water in an atomizer and add 12 drops of your favorite aroma. Shake well and spray into the room to mask unpleasant odors and introduce pleasant, enjoyable and healthy aromas. Make small batches frequently to ensure freshness.
Room Sprays: Try these two room sprays which feature tea tree oil (also good for a flea deterrent!!). Mix the oils in one ounce of water in a spray mist bottle, usually found at a dollar store or supermarket travel section. Shake well and spray fragrance in the air in troubled areas.
Pet Blend
8 drops cedarwood oil
4 drops tea tree oil
Deodorizing Spray
6 drops bergamot oil
1 drop tea tree oil
5 drops lemon oil
Having a clean and odor free home, that happens to house several pets, isn't mission impossible. Prevention is key, and staying on top of routine grooming and cleaning will insure your home is a welcoming one for you, your family and friends.
